Why is it important to keep the skin hydrated? Well, our skin must be kept adequately hydrated in order for it to protect our bodies from UV radiation and toxic agents. Hydrated skin is skin that remains plump and resilient, allowing our protective barrier to remain intact. This is due in part to an ingredient in our skin called Hyaluronic Acid; this is what holds the water in our skin.
Drink Plenty of Water
This is a bit of an obvious one, but keeping hydrated means getting enough water so that your body can function efficiently. The recommended amount varies, but 1-2 litres of water a day should be enough to keep you hydrated. When exercising you will need to drink more water to replenish what you lose when sweating.
Eat the Right Foods
There are also foods that help to keep your skin hydrated. Our skin has a natural barrier to help retain moisture, that barrier contains Omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon, flax seeds, and walnuts are rich in Omega-3, including these foods in your diet will boost your Omega-3 intake and help moisturize your skin.
Spinach is also a food that is full of vitamins, the main one here in order to replenish the skin is Vitamin A, a skin-strengthening vitamin.
Berries of all varieties not only contain juice to keep you hydrated, but also have vitamins and antioxidants to protect and strengthen your skin.
Boost Your Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid is a water holding molecule found in mammals, this gel-like molecule is the space filler in our joints and nerves, it hydrates our skin and hair, and fills the eyes.
Hydrating Mask – Using a hydrating face mask will give your skin a boost of deep down hydration. A non-comedogenic mask like our Hydro Gel Face Mask will not clog your pores.
Hydra Boost – Our Hydra Boost Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, provides the nourishing ingredients your skin needs to stay radiant and beautiful.
Hyaluronic acid is able to hold over 200 times its weight in water, which makes it an excellent moisturiser. Unlike products that depend on moisture in the air, it can help hydrate skin even in dry climates or heated rooms that rob skin of moisture.
Exfoliating gets rid of the dead skin barrier that keeps your skin looking dull and stops creams and serums getting in. Doing this regularly will keep the skin breathable, helping your body repair and regenerate.
Our Brightening Enzyme & Acid Peel has extracts of Pineapple and Papaya combined with proven natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), natural Glycolic and Lactic acids, to create a highly effective, yet gentle peeling gel. This can be used up to twice a week to dissolve dead skin with minimum irritation and optimum results.
For sensitive skin, try our Sensitive Skin Enzyme Peel, this can also be used in the delicate eye area. Use up to twice per week to leave exfoliated, soft, bright and beautiful skin.
Keep on Moving
Regular exercise boosts circulation, supplying the skin with oxygenated blood. This is where that great post-workout glow comes from. Aerobic exercise is also great stress reliever as it maintains healthy levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol. Elevated levels of cortisol are linked to increased sebum production, which leads to acne breakouts.
Too much cortisol can also cause the breakdown of collagen in our skin, which increases wrinkles and sagging. Exercise supports the production of collagen, this boost in protein helps keep the skin firm and supple.
Implementing all of the above will keep your body and skin perfectly hydrated, helping to protect against toxic agents and microorganisms. As well as making sure you do these things, make sure you stay away from alcohol and caffeine, as these are known as diuretics which draw water out of your system and skin. If you are drinking these make sure you replenish with plenty of water. When there is a good amount of water inside and out, the skin looks more vibrant, plump, and is less prone to wrinkles.
